Excerpts from the chat session with Mr Rajiv Dube
Rajiv_Dube: Hello Everybody
cellini: how are you planning to compete on design with foreign car makers?
Rajiv_Dube: We have a fairly strong product development center at our facilities in Pune which has been the nerve center for the design of our products including the safari and the Indica.
cellini: the product is excellent, I have driven it. but my question was on design.
Rajiv_Dube: I was indeed trying to answer your question on design. The product development center at Pune has stylists who are closely following trends in the world of automotive design besides a strength of over 1000 engineers who are constantly working on improving and developing our products.
chetan: hello Mr. rajiv
Rajiv_Dube: hello chetan
chetan: what do u feel about Hyundai santro being aggressive in the marketing and has almost captured the market share in the mid car size . how would indica react to it
Rajiv_Dube: we respect Hyundai as a player in the car industry but are confident of creating a place for ourselves in the market. The Indica has already clocked a 9% share of the total passenger car market in its first year and the sales nos. continue to be robust in the current financial year.
chetan: is tata planning to sell cars through the net ?
Rajiv_Dube: We are currently trying to address customer service issues through the net. We believe that in India car buying is a high involvement, high investment decision where customers are interested in feeling and touching the product and knowing the face of the company through a physical interaction at the dealerships. Hence while we are seeing the net as a selling opportunity for our products, we feel that the right time is still some distance away.
deep71:How different is the Indiica2000 for which have been seeing ads , other than the fact that it has a petrol engine?
Rajiv_Dube: We have just launched the Indica 2000 in May last month as also 5 new variants of the Sumo. There is a likely hood that more variants of our existing platforms could be launched through the remaining part of the year.
chetan: the passenger cars produced by tata have either been withdrawn or have not been able to capture the market share in the passenger cars segment have u have a monopoly in the commercial car segments . then why passenger cars are lagging behind ?
Rajiv_Dube: I am surprised to hear your statement about the withdrawal of our products. No product has been withdrawn. The Indica is our 5th offering preceded by the sierra, estate, sumo and the safari of which the sumo, safari and the Indica enjoy considerable market shares. We have a 24% share of the utility vehicle market as well as a 9% share of the passenger car market which will grow during the current year.
